The level of boundaries and support varies for everyone in this world. While many of us appreciate the advantages of social media and online interactions (after all, you're likely reading this from a social media post), we also acknowledge the overwhelming and sometimes triggering effects that accompany it.
Social media can be a place of joy, filled with happy news, fun pictures, and uplifting stories. However, it can also expose us to distressing news, frustrating interactions, and an endless stream of content that leads to doomscrolling. Before we realize it, we may find ourselves deep in a rabbit hole, consuming information that negatively impacts our mental health.
The Importance of Setting Boundaries
Establishing boundaries with social media is essential for maintaining emotional stability in mental health. While encountering distressing or unfortunate news is sometimes unavoidable, we have the power to control our exposure and consumption. Being mindful of how much time and energy we dedicate to online interactions can prevent us from feeling overwhelmed.
The effects of excessive social media use can include:
Increased anxiety and stress
Sleep disturbances from late-night scrolling
Disengagement from in-person interactions
Missed responsibilities such as appointments, mealtimes, or daily activities
At Parents' Foundation for Transitional Living (PFTL), we recognize the importance of finding a balance between digital engagement and real-world connections. To support our residents, we integrate structured guidelines from the very beginning of their stay to help them establish appropriate boundaries with electronic devices and social media use.
How PFTL Integrates Healthy Social Media Practices

Setting appropriate boundaries starts from the moment a resident is admitted. Our structured approach ensures that residents develop responsible and mindful habits surrounding technology use. Here are some of the practices we implement:
Access to electronic devices (e.g., tablets, laptops, cell phones, and iPods) is determined upon admission and reviewed within the first 30 days.
Televisions and gaming consoles are not permitted in residents’ rooms to encourage engagement in communal spaces.
If a resident does not have access to a cellphone, they can make calls using the house phone.
Care Coordinators assist residents and their families in setting up appropriate phone plans.
Residents maintain autonomy in deciding with whom they wish to communicate.
These guidelines are in place to foster healthy digital habits, promote social interaction, and encourage mindfulness about the content consumed online. By creating these boundaries early on, residents are better equipped to navigate the digital world without becoming overwhelmed or disconnected from their personal growth and recovery journey.
Finding Balance
While technology and social media have their advantages, being intentional about how and when we engage with them can make a significant difference in our mental well-being. PFTL’s approach ensures that residents develop sustainable habits that support their overall stability and growth. By implementing thoughtful boundaries, we help individuals find a balance that enhances their well-being rather than detracts from it.
If you or a loved one is looking for a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health while integrating mindful technology use, Parents' Foundation for Transitional Living is here to help. Let's create healthier digital habits together.
