Voices of Our Community: Sharing Stories for Mental Health Awareness Month

At Parents’ Foundation for Transitional Living (PFTL), every story matters.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re taking time to uplift the voices, creativity, and lived experiences of our residents, because real change begins when people feel seen, heard, and supported.

Last week, Tahnesha and Kyleigh had the opportunity to go live on air and in person for a special CT Buzz segment. This moment allowed us to bring viewers inside the world of PFTL, offering a glimpse into the heart of our community.

During the segment, they shared live poetry written by residents, highlighted meaningful artwork, and spoke about the importance of creating spaces where individuals can express themselves freely. These weren’t just creative pieces; they were reflections of growth, resilience,

and the unique journeys each resident is on.

Moments like these remind us that mental health is not one-size-fits-all. It is deeply personal, constantly evolving, and shaped by connection, support, and opportunity.

More Than Awareness, A Community in Action

While Mental Health Awareness Month brings important attention to these conversations, the work doesn’t begin and end here. At PFTL, we are committed every day to building an environment where individuals can move forward on their own terms.

There are many ways to be part of this movement:

  • Listen to and uplift lived experiences

  • Help reduce stigma by having open conversations

  • Share stories that inspire understanding and connection

  • Engage with and support mental health-focused communities

Even the smallest actions can create a meaningful impact.

Why It Matters

What we continue to see, through art, poetry, and personal reflection, is that healing and growth thrive in spaces where people feel safe to be themselves.

Every step forward, every story shared, and every connection made helps “stack the deck” in favor of those navigating their mental health journeys. It creates more access, more opportunity, and more hope.

Looking Ahead

There is so much more to share this month. From resident voices to creative expression, we are proud to continue highlighting the strength and individuality within our community.

Together, we can keep building a future where mental health is supported, understood, and prioritized, not just in moments, but every day.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
