Why We Give on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving:

After the rush of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday serves as a reminder that community, generosity, and hope are what truly connect us. Since it began in 2012, this Global Day of Giving has inspired kindness and collective action in countless local communities. At Parents’ Foundation for Transitional Living, those same values have shaped everything we do for more than three decades.

Parents’ Foundation was designed to be a place where adults living with serious mental illness would heal, grow, and experience meaningful recovery. Established in 1992 as an alternative to institutional care, we continue to fill the critical gap between hospitalization and independent living.

Every resident who comes to Parents’ Foundation has faced immense challenges, including repeated hospitalizations, isolation, and a loss of connection to the community. Here, they rediscover stability, purpose, and belonging.

“Parents’ Foundation has been perfect for our family. We feel like our daughter is safe and cared for, and she has come a very long way since she first participated. We have hope, which we have not had for a very long time.”

The Impact of Past Giving:

Support from our community has fueled every milestone in our mission. Thanks to past Giving Tuesday donations and year-round generosity, we have been able to:

  • Reimagine our courtyard as a calming, inclusive space for connection and reflection.

  • Remodel our kitchen to support shared meals, nutrition education, and culinary skill-building.

  • Expand and enhance psychosocial rehabilitation programming for stronger recovery support.

  • Furnish resident spaces that foster comfort and belonging.

  • Build valuable partnerships with occupational therapy, a registered dietitian, and art therapy specialists who enrich daily life.

These tangible improvements reflect one universal truth: recovery happens through community, not isolation.

The Heart of Our Work: Psychosocial Rehabilitation:

Psychosocial rehabilitation is at the core of our program model. It’s what moves our residents toward independence and meaningful recovery. While symptom management is crucial, genuine healing requires opportunities to rebuild skills, relationships, and self-confidence.

At Parents’ Foundation, psychosocial rehabilitation is not an abstract concept; it’s a living practice. Our staff and partners integrate skill-building into daily activities, turning ordinary experiences into opportunities for progress. Whether residents are learning to navigate daily routines, express themselves through art, or share meals that build both confidence and community, every moment contributes to lasting recovery.

National research underscores this approach: studies funded by the NIH show a 75–86% reduction in hospital stays among people engaged in psychosocial rehabilitation programs. Our own data aligns closely with nearly 80% of residents achieving long-term stability and breaking cycles of rehospitalization.

Why Giving Tuesday Matters Here:

Your support on this Giving Tuesday ensures that individuals living at Parents’ Foundation have the opportunity to experience recovery beyond symptom management in a safe, structured environment where healing happens daily. Every donation builds on more than thirty years of progress and turning compassion into concrete change.

Donate today, because everyone deserves a life filled with connection, hope, and community. Your generosity sustains transformation.
